Columbus Comets Win to Advance to Round Three of Women's Football Alliance Playoffs

Columbus, OH -- Following a stirring National Anthem by Columbus Comets player Shannon MacGregor the second round playoff game for the Columbus Comets kicked off. In a second consecutive home playoff game on Saturday, July 10 the Comets and National Conference, Region I, North East Division Champions Philadelphia Liberty Belles each put their 2010 undefeated record on the line.
At the end of four quarters the Comets were the only team with a home week two playoff game to advance to the third round of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA) playoffs. The Comets defeated the Liberty Belles by a score of 36 to 7.
The victory sets the stage for the WFA Semi-Final Game on Saturday, July 17 at the Comets field. With a kick-off time of 7:00 p.m. the Comets will take on Saint Louis Slam. The Slam advanced having travelled to Jacksonville on July 10. The Slam defeated the Jacksonville Dixie Blues by a score of 52-36. The winner of the July 17 Comets-Slam contest will advance to the 2010 WFA National Championship Game. The National Championship Game will be played on July 31 in Las Vegas.
In his post-game comments Head Coach Hank Patterson said "This game was extremely hard fought by both teams. The Liberty Belles gave great effort and are a well coached team." He continued saying "The on field work given tonight by the Comets was at the level we needed to have to advance to the next game. We hope to continue the plans and show the Columbus fans a good game week next and win the next game. It will be another great team full of great players coming to Columbus on July 17."
Assistant Coach Dave Snider noted that "the largest crowd of the season was not only great to see but made us more dedicated to getting the job done against the Liberty Belles". "I know that Coach Patterson has stressed this but this next game is going to be one between two superb teams and we need to continue our focus for the next game in the coming week".
The Comets practice on upcoming Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at the Huffaker Sports Complex.
With this latest win the Comets are on a nine game winning streak of both regular and post season play. Tickets will be available at the ticket gate at Huffaker Sports Complex, Grove City.
