July 5, 2010
Columbus, OH -- A Women's Football Alliance (WFA) second round playoff game for the Columbus Comets is at their home field. The game will be played at Huffaker Sports Complex, Grove City, OH on Saturday, July 10. Kick-off time is at 4:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two teams and tickets will be sold at the door.
Riding into Columbus to take on the Comets will be the Philadelphia Liberty Belles. The Liberty Belles are undefeated this season at 9-0. The Liberty Belles are the defending champion of the WFA's North East Division. In their first round playoff game they defeated the West Michigan Mayhem 35-33.
Head Coach Hank Patterson noted the following about the Liberty Belles: "This team can move the ball. They have a tough running back that has run for over 1,000 yards this season. She has a league high 24 touchdowns and averages over 17 yards with each carry. Marirose Roach, their running back is no joke and will test our defense."
The Liberty Belles have used two quarterbacks this season, Jeanette Hibbs and Mikaelyn Austin. "Both of these players are great at the QB position and Hibbs was named to the All-American WFA team," said Patterson.
The defensive unit of the Liberty Belles also has players named to the WFA All-American team. The defensive unit allows an average of 8.3 points per game to be scored upon them. "That defensive stat shows us that we have to be crisp in our offensive play," said Patterson. He added that it is a "well-balanced defensive attack."
The Comets practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Huffaker Sports Complex.
With this latest win the Comets are on a nine game winning streak of both regular and post season play. With this latest game Coach Patterson has a WFA record of 53-17.
