Scrimmage Report vs. Cleveland

April 2, 2010

Columbus, OH -- With the start of the regular season in the near future, the Columbus Comets staff spent much of the March 27 scrimmage evaluating players in an effort to solidify a two-deep depth chart prior to the 2010 season start. The scrimmage took place at the Comets home field against the Cleveland Fusion.

"We were pleased to have an opportunity to go live against an opponent. After awhile our offensive and defensive units are tired of going against each other in practice,? head coach Hank Patterson said. ?We scrimmage at different times throughout the week, but this was an opportunity for more game-like situations. We needed to find out who can tackle, get some almost game time experience and get everyone exposed to live action."

During Saturday's scrimmage, the coaches signaled plays in from the sidelines, rather than remaining on the field, like a normal practice.

Veteran quarterback Crystal Davis took the majority of snaps. Also seeing action as quarterback was Latrice Johnson. "Our quarterback situation is important to the success of our team," Patterson said. The defense also saw much action in the scrimmage. "Our defense, as in the past seasons, will need to step up during the season. I am hoping that the depth and knowledge of the players will continue as the season moves along," Patterson continued.

"We need to get a solid two-deep in place," Patterson said of the defense. "We want to play 22 solid players who show great effort on that side of the ball.

"We have some work to do, based on our coaching analysis of the scrimmage. When the first kickoff comes we hope to begin a season that will lead us to the playoffs and the championship. We hope to see a lot of Columbus at our first home game on April 24," Patterson concluded.
