Columbus Comets Look to Continue Win Streak
March 21, 2010
Columbus, OH -- The 2010 Columbus Comets football team is looking to keep its winning streak alive. In 2009, the Comets completed the regular season unbeaten with an 8-0 record. That led to Comets to a 2009 playoff berth and being Women's Football Alliance Mid-Atlantic Division Champions.
Heading into his seventh year as head coach, Hank Patterson (44-17 overall at Columbus) welcomes back many of the players from last year's team. With the retirement of several players, including an original Comet L.T. Harris, offensive line, Patterson has re-tooled and is super high on the returners and the solid incoming corps and second year players. The Comets features a balanced run and pass attack on the offensive side of the ball. The defensive unit looks to continue its dominant tone established in the past years. Patterson remains the Offensive Coordinator with Bob Burrell remains as the Defensive Coordinator.
Quarterback Crystal Davis returns for her seventh season at the helm. A perennial All-Star selection, Davis is joined by returning veterans Staci Alkula, Whitney Barnes, Azelia Goings, Lorain Harris, Latrice Johnson, Carolyn O'Leary, Breanne Martin and Christie Sabatucci (offense), Shelly Gates, Ivy Ortman, Dietra Sherwin, Tiffany Sollberger (defense).
"We're very excited about this team's development," said Patterson. "The experiences that our players gained last season plus our off-season work have put us in a position to drive this team in the direction we want to go."
Joining the Comets are several new players. Kristen Auel, Erika Englund and Deasha Talley will help in the offensive side of the ball. They will be joined by former Ohio State Women's Basketball player, Star Allen. Allen will also see work on the defensive side of the ball. Englund played her college ball at Ohio Dominican and Auel played at Urbana University.
"Albeit a young group, I like the football savvy that these players have demonstrated already," said Patterson.
"We're focused on this year's tough schedule," said Patterson. "The WFA is really up this year. With the improvement in the league, it should be a dogfight week in and week out all the way to the end. We hope that our play is representative of the great sports teams in our city's history. "
The Comets have a pre-season scrimmage against the Cleveland Fusion on March 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Grove City High School's Huffaker Sports Complex.
